Dr Elizabeth Vallance – A Tribute
CEDR was saddened to learn of the death this summer of Dr Elizabeth Vallance. Dr Vallance was a chair of CEDR’s Board of Trustees from February 2011 to January 2017.
Dr Vallance was a renowned academic, having been a lecturer in philosophy at the University of London and then joining Queen Mary University of London, where she became Head of the Politics Department and where she was subsequently made an Honorary Fellow.
Following her academic career, Dr Vallance went on to chair a number of organisations, in addition to CEDR, including St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the children’s charity I CAN and the Centre for Mental Health.
In 2006 she joined the UK Government’s Committee on Standards in Public Life and in 2009 Dr Vallance was appointed High Sheriff of Greater London.

“We were all sorry at CEDR to hear of the passing of Elizabeth. She was dedicated to her role at CEDR and brought her skills, energy, enthusiasm and distinctive personality to the way in which she performed her duties. She chaired our organisation for six years during a period of much change and successful growth. Our sincerest sympathies go out to her husband, Lord Vallance, her children and the rest of her family.”
